After F.W. Murnau’s move to the USA, this ambitious co-production sees the German director head down to the islands of the South Pacific for a classic tale of forbidden love and adventure featuring an almost entirely local native cast. When the local “Godess” dies, the head of the neighbouring tribe is granted the local beauty as his virgin queen – thus making her Tabu. However, she has already fallen in love with a devilishly handsome young local boy, who rescues her away from her betrothed, only to unleash a superstitious curse and see the entire tribe come after them. The exotic locales and indigienous people bring an air of authenticity to this classic story, which ends on a shockingly downbeat note.
