Werner Herzog continues his troubled, yet fruitful partnership with actor Klaus Kinski to tell this empassioned and rather insane story of an Irish opera lover in turn-of-the-century Peru, chasing his dream of bringing his greatest love to the Amazon rainforest. Claudia Cardinale is stunning as Fitzcarraldo’s benefactor, but this is Kinski’s show, as he thrashes around in the all-consuming jungle, rallying the natives to help him drag his steamboat up a mountain. Maverick filmmaking at its best.
