Opening with a swift recap of the events of the 1974 original film, this latest entry reveals that an infant member of the cannibalistic Sawyer family survived and has now come of age. Heather (Alexandra Daddario) heads to Texas with a van full of friends to scope out her new inheritance, only to discover Leatherface locked away in the basement. While much of the plot here is a basic re-hash of the first film, albeit sexier, bloodier and frustratingly out of synch with its own timeline (Heather should be 38, rather than in her early 20s), the film does attempt to do something new and different in its final third, which kind of works. While not a patch on Hooper’s original, this is not a complete write-off, and delivers a few jumps, gnarly deaths and tentatively pushes the series in some intriguing new directions.
