A notorious film for any number of reasons, from its numerous titles, spectacularly gruesome effects, ridiculous moments of action or inclusion on the Video Nasties list, Lucio Fulci’s Zombie Flesh Eaters stands up incredibly well since I first saw it on a ropey VHS bootleg back in he early 1990s.
In large part the film still delivers thanks to Arrow Video’s fantastic Blu-ray presentation, but also in its exotic setting, exploitative nature and Gino De Rossi’s gruey effects work. Made as a cheap knock-off sequel to George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, which had been released as Zombie in Italy, the films have little in common, with Fulci’s film focusing on a voodoo-fuelled zombie uprising on a remote Caribbean island. Probably best-remembered as the film in which a zombie fights a shark, it also features a great score from Fabio Frizzo, and Arrow Video complement the film with a bountiful 2-disc release packed full of superb extras.
