Superb character drama from Mexico that follows a father and daughter battling to put their lives back on track following the death of their wife and mother. Alejandra (Tessa Ia) at first fits in well at her new school, but a foolish error of judgement turns her classmates against her, who begin an increasingly brutal regime of bullying and victimisation. Meanwhile, her father has an equally difficult time settling into his new job. Events come to a head on a school field trip, leading to an incredibly bleak, shocking but brilliant finale. Using long unobtrusive takes that capture a uniformly excellent cast of naturalistic performances, Michel Franco’s film is a brilliant piece of work that deserves to be held alongside the very best of Michael Haneke’s output.
