three charmed lives
Disappointing anthology of shorts, each directed by a prominent Asian actor. Francis Ng begins proceedings badly with The Tangerine, following a vagrant fugitive on the run in a Southern Chinese city, who meets a friendly fruit vendor and fellow steet sleepers, while the rich shun him. Jung Woo-sung’s slick yet uninvolving The Killer, Behind The Old Man follows a hit man as he wrestles with a job offer to dispatch an elderly target. Chang Chen’s Inchworm is the best of the bunch, but even his tale of a reclusive professional video gamer, who neglects his family in favour of his work, fails to connect.
