10 Best Films From the 31st Busan International Film Festival

The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), which closed on October 15, drew 277,027 visitors, roughly 40,000 more than last year and the highest since 2015.

The 10-day event screened more than 300 films from 59 countries. Alongside 95 world premieres, the programme featured the Asian premieres of several prestigious award winners from Cannes and Venice, including Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner Fjord and May el-Toukhy’s Golden Lion recipient Woman Unknown.

Other highlights included Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, starring John Malkovich as a jaded CIA agent, a role many are tipping for Oscar glory. Closer to home, first-time Hong Kong filmmaker Isabella Lam Lok-hin’s thriller Dead End, produced by Soi Cheang Pou-soi, also received its world premiere.

While it is impossible to do more than scratch the surface of such a wide selection, here are 10 of the best films that screened at the festival.
