Probably Wong Kar Wai’s best film and certainly his most visually accomplished, this is a delicate, ornate study of social mores, forbidden love and loyalty in the face of infidelity. Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung are immaculate and stunning as they loiter around each other’s apartments, share clandestine meetings in the back alleys of 1960s Hong Kong, while discussing the implications of the fact their partners are involved in an affair. What the film accomplishes so well is to capture its period setting so well that the film itself never feels dated. It is a timeless work of art that will only become more loved and appreciate in decades to come than it already is now. One of the great cinematic love stories and perhaps the greatest accomplishment the Hong Kong industry has ever produced.
