The Bling Ring
Sofia Coppola’s latest has a serious problem at its core – it is not nearly condemning enough about its vacuous, materialistic, fame-obsessed protagonists, who rob the Hollywood homes of famous celebrities when they are overseas promoting their films or hosting fabulous events. Emma Watson, Israel Broussard and Katie Chang lead the cast of wannabes, who pillage the designer wardrobes of Paris Hilton and the like, only to flaunt it so brazenly they inevitably come unstuck. Based on real events only a certain degree of judgement can be levelled at Coppola for her take on the story, although her previous works show she has plenty of first-hand knowledge of these people ad this kind of lifestyle. One can’t help but feel a degree of disdain and pity for these young people that the film seems reluctant to encourage.
